Even when their profiles indicate that they are indifferent about the race or ethnicity of a potential romantic interest. The researchers expected to find homophily, a social science term which means love of the same, in their analysis but they were surprised that the internet did not play a role in eroding reluctance to date outside ones own race.

“Segregation remains a state of mind as much as it is a physical reality.” The study indicates that more than 80 percent of the communication initiated by whites was to other whites. Black members of the same site were more open to dating whites and were ten times more likely to contact whites.

Black men were actually slightly more likely to initiate contact with white women than black women.

Black women [since slavery] were largely viewed as unattractive, and this legacy of being treated second-class to white women largely carries on to today.

In fact, in 2011 the magazine Also, Black man/white woman pornography is one of the most popular types of pornography consumed by white men because of the myth that black men are animalistic…that black men having sex with white women becomes a form of fetishized punishment.

Professor Mendelsohn, attributed this to the influence of cultural imperatives on all American men.

“In this country, our notions of feminine attractiveness are based almost entirely on images of white women…“When the constraints of segregation are lifted by technology, what do people do?They don’t act all that differently,” said Gerald Mendelsohn, Ph D, one of the professors who worked on the study. His decision to write a piece about dating white women, without contextualizing the ways in which white women have always been favored in this country because of white supremacy, is quite troubling.Lori from states: Baker fails to realize that black women are not necessarily upset that black men date white women, but that white women are culturally viewed as “prettier” in relation to them being “uglier.” Britni Danielle from Clutch Magazine states: The problem comes in when a person throws entire swaths of people under the bus to justify their preferences (or worse, tries to convert others to their point of view), or in Bakers case, writes 2,600 word diatribes trying to justify a preference that doesn’t need justifying in the first place. When it comes to online dating, segregation appears to be alive and well.
